Liposuction – 5 Frequently Asked Questions
Busy, busy, busy. That is the motto for most of us today. The time for home cooking rather than convenience food is decreasing all a rapid rate. The result is slowly but surely we are all getting bigger. Liposuction can help shift the fat along with better diet and a bit more activity.
Women typically gain the extra lumps and bumps of fat round the hips and thighs while for men its the belly. Liposuction used over several areas makes a real difference.
Liposuction can’t make you thin and keep you that way. It can add into the benefits of healthy eating and physical activity.
Liposuction – What is that?
Liposuction means having some of your fat sucked out from under your skin in the lumpy, bumpy areas. It can be done on most parts of your body but the most frequent areas are thighs, tummy, knees, arms, back and neck. Tumescent liposuction is currently the most commonly performed procedure.
You cannot have too much fat removed during the operation without risking serious problems and several days unwell in hospital. Surgeons know and recognise this and tens of thousands of patients have liposuction and are very happy.
This is clearly not the result you want so there is a weight limit of how much fat is removed. However modern surgical techniques are improving all the time so when you see your surgeon he or she will go into more detail about this and what your options are.
Will I need to stay in hospital?
Overnight stays are getting less common as procedures improve. Other cosmetic procedures performed at the same time as liposuction may need an overnight stay.
Will I need an anesthetic?
Many operations including liposuction can now be carried out using local anesthetic and short acting sedatives. So you’re pain free and drowsy but wake up quickly. A happy side effect of sedatives is loss of short-term memory so you may not even remember your operation.
Is liposuction safe?
Liposuction is very safe. Although it is major surgery with properly trained surgeons and nurses there are not many serious problems afterwards. The key is to use a fully trained cosmetic or plastic surgeon with a professional attitude and practice.
Can I undergo multiple liposuction operations?
You can have several liposuction procedures but it is better to moderate your diet and exercise a bit more. Repeat operations become more difficult and have a higher complication rate. Chat with your surgeon and get their opinion.
For the very good reason that it works, liposuction is one of the most frequently performed cosmetic surgery operations. In the right hands it is the answer to all those areas where the fat just will not go. Remember that cheap liposuction is not always the answer.
